Edification

The concept of “edification” in the Bible refers to the act of building up or strengthening the faith, knowledge, or moral character of believers. In the New Testament, the Greek word often translated as “edification” is oikodomē, which literally means “the building of a house.” However, it is used metaphorically to refer to the spiritual building up of the church and individuals in faith and love.

Definition of Edification:

  • Edification: In a biblical sense, edification is the process of improving and strengthening the moral and spiritual character of believers. It involves teaching, encouragement, and activities that promote the spiritual growth of the church or an individual.

Key Bible Scriptures:

  1. 1 Corinthians 14:26 – “How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.”
    • Meaning: This scripture emphasizes that everything done in the church, whether it be teaching, singing, or prophesying, should aim to edify and build up the believers.
  2. Ephesians 4:11-12 – “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”
    • Meaning: God has given different gifts and roles within the church to help build up (edify) the body of Christ, bringing believers to spiritual maturity.
  3. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 – “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”
    • Meaning: Believers are encouraged to support and build each other up in faith and encouragement.
  4. Romans 15:2 – “Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.”
    • Meaning: Christians are called to act in ways that are beneficial and that build others up spiritually.
  5. 2 Corinthians 10:8 – “For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed.”
    • Meaning: Paul emphasizes that the authority given by the Lord to the apostles is meant to build up (edify) the church, not to tear it down.

Prayer Points for Edification with Scriptures:

  1. Prayer for Spiritual Growth and Edification
    • Scripture: Ephesians 4:12
    • Prayer: “Father, I pray that You continue to perfect me and Your people for the work of the ministry. Strengthen us so that we may edify one another and grow in spiritual maturity, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
  2. Prayer for Encouragement and Comfort
    • Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:11
    • Prayer: “Lord, help us to comfort and edify one another in our faith. May we be sources of encouragement and strength to those around us, as we walk together in love. Amen.”
  3. Prayer for Unity in the Body of Christ
    • Scripture: Romans 15:2
    • Prayer: “Heavenly Father, grant us the grace to please and edify one another in love. Help us to work towards the good of others, that Your church may be built up in unity and strength. Amen.”
  4. Prayer for the Use of Spiritual Gifts
    • Scripture: 1 Corinthians 14:26
    • Prayer: “Lord, I pray that every gift and talent You have given us be used for the edification of the church. Let all things be done for the building up of Your people, so that we may grow in faith and knowledge. Amen.”
  5. Prayer for Wisdom and Understanding in Edification
    • Scripture: 2 Corinthians 10:8
    • Prayer: “Lord, give us the wisdom to use the authority and gifts You have given us for the edification of others, not for destruction. Help us to build one another up in love and truth. Amen.”

Edification, in a biblical sense, involves actions, words, or behaviors that build up or strengthen someone’s spiritual life, moral character, or faith. Below are examples of edification in different contexts:

1. Encouraging Others in Their Faith

  • Example: A fellow believer shares a testimony of how God answered a prayer or worked in their life. This encourages others to trust in God’s faithfulness and strengthens their faith.
  • Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:11 – “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”

2. Teaching Sound Doctrine

  • Example: A pastor or Bible study leader teaches a group of believers about foundational biblical truths, such as salvation by grace through faith, helping them grow in understanding and spiritual maturity.
  • Scripture: Ephesians 4:11-12 – “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”

3. Correcting in Love

  • Example: A mature Christian gently corrects a fellow believer who has gone astray, offering guidance with love and care to help them realign with God’s Word.
  • Scripture: Galatians 6:1 – “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.”

4. Acts of Service

  • Example: A group of church members volunteers to help a family in need by providing meals, helping with chores, or offering financial support. These acts of kindness not only meet physical needs but also uplift the spirits of the recipients, reminding them of God’s love.
  • Scripture: Romans 15:2 – “Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.”

5. Building Up Through Worship

  • Example: During a church service, the congregation joins in heartfelt worship, lifting each other up through songs, prayers, and the proclamation of God’s Word. This collective worship strengthens everyone’s faith and reminds them of God’s presence.
  • Scripture: 1 Corinthians 14:26 – “Let all things be done unto edifying.”

6. Mentoring or Discipleship

  • Example: An older, spiritually mature believer mentors a younger Christian, guiding them in prayer, study of the Bible, and helping them to live out their faith in everyday situations. This one-on-one relationship is an intentional act of edification.
  • Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:2 – “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

7. Praying for Others

  • Example: A believer intercedes for another who is going through a difficult time, praying for their strength, comfort, and spiritual growth. Knowing someone is praying for them can deeply edify and encourage a person in their faith journey.
  • Scripture: James 5:16 – “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.”

8. Encouraging Others to Use Their Gifts

  • Example: A church leader encourages members to discover and use their spiritual gifts for the benefit of the church, such as encouraging someone with the gift of teaching to lead a Bible study or someone with the gift of hospitality to organize community events.
  • Scripture: 1 Peter 4:10 – “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”

9. Sharing God’s Word

  • Example: A believer shares a verse of Scripture with someone who is feeling discouraged. The Word of God brings comfort, encouragement, and strength to the listener, building them up in their faith.
  • Scripture: Colossians 3:16 – “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

10. Exhorting Others to Good Works

  • Example: A Christian friend encourages another to get involved in ministry or outreach, inspiring them to serve others and live out their faith actively. This exhortation can help believers grow in their faith and become more committed to serving Christ.
  • Scripture: Hebrews 10:24-25 – “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another.”

Summary:

Edification is all about encouraging, teaching, and helping others grow spiritually, morally, and emotionally. Whether through teaching, correction, service, prayer, or encouragement, believers can edify each other in various ways to strengthen their faith and build up the body of Christ.
