Goodness

Definition: The Bible defines goodness as an essential attribute of God and a quality that reflects His nature. Goodness in the biblical sense encompasses moral excellence, kindness, righteousness, and love. It goes beyond merely doing good deeds; it is rooted in the character of God Himself.

  1. God’s Nature: Goodness is part of God’s nature, and everything He does is good. This goodness is reflected in His creation, His laws, and His actions toward humanity.
    • Psalm 100:5: “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”
    • Nahum 1:7: “The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”
  2. Moral Excellence and Righteousness: Goodness is seen as living a life in accordance with God’s commandments, demonstrating kindness, mercy, and justice.
    • Micah 6:8: “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
  3. The Fruit of the Spirit: Goodness is also listed as one of the fruits of the Spirit, indicating that it is a result of living a life empowered by the Holy Spirit.
    • Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

  4. Exodus 33:19: “And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.”
  5. James 1:17: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
  6. 2 Thessalonians 1:11: “Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power.”
