Impurity

Definition: In the Bible, impurity often refers to anything that is morally or spiritually unclean, defiled, or corrupt. It can involve actions, thoughts, or states of being that are contrary to God’s holiness and righteousness. Impurity is frequently associated with sin, immorality, and the rejection of God’s commandments.

Key Scriptures about Impurity

  1. Ephesians 5:3 “But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints.”
    • This verse highlights the call for believers to avoid all forms of impurity.
  2. Colossians 3:5 “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”
    • This verse urges believers to put to death anything that leads to impurity, emphasizing the seriousness of these sins.
  3. Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”
    • This passage lists impurity among the works of the flesh, warning that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s kingdom.
  4. James 1:21 “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”
    • This verse encourages believers to remove all moral filth and accept God’s Word, which leads to salvation.
  5. 1 Thessalonians 4:7 “For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.”
    • This verse reminds us that God calls His people to live in holiness, avoiding all forms of impurity.
