Sabbath

The Biblical Definition of Sabbath: The Sabbath is a day of rest and worship, commanded by God as a holy day. It was established by God at creation and later included in the Ten Commandments as a perpetual covenant for His people.

Key Scriptures About the Sabbath

  • Genesis 2:2-3: “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”
  • Exodus 20:8-10: “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:”
  • Exodus 31:16-17: “Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.”
  • Isaiah 58:13-14: “If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.”
  • Mark 2:27-28: “And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.”
  • Hebrews 4:9-10: “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.”

🕊️🕊️Just like you still have to follow the 10 commandments, the New Testament doesn’t cancel the Sabbath or Tithes and Offerings🕊️🕊️

Why It Is Important to Continue Observing the Sabbath?

  1. It Is a Command from God – The Sabbath is part of the Ten Commandments, showing its significance in God’s law.
  2. It Is a Sign of Covenant – Observing the Sabbath is a sign of God’s everlasting covenant with His people (Exodus 31:16-17).
  3. It Brings Spiritual and Physical Refreshing – Just as God rested, He desires His people to rest and be refreshed in Him (Genesis 2:3).
  4. Jesus Acknowledged Its Purpose – Jesus taught that the Sabbath was made for man, emphasizing its continued importance (Mark 2:27).
  5. It Strengthens Faith and Relationship with God – Setting aside time for worship, prayer, and reflection deepens our relationship with the Lord.
  6. It Points to the Eternal Rest in Christ – Hebrews 4:9-10 teaches that the Sabbath foreshadows the ultimate rest believers will have in Christ.

Key Prayer Points Based on the Scriptures

  1. Thanksgiving for the Sabbath: “Father, thank You for the gift of the Sabbath, a time to rest and draw closer to You.”
  2. Grace to Honor the Sabbath: “Lord, help me to keep the Sabbath holy and honor You in my rest and worship (Exodus 20:8-10).”
  3. Spiritual Refreshing and Renewal: “Father, as I rest in You on the Sabbath, let my soul be refreshed and my spirit renewed (Isaiah 58:13-14).”
  4. Understanding the True Meaning of Sabbath: “Lord, give me wisdom to understand and observe the Sabbath in the way that pleases You (Mark 2:27-28).”
  5. Blessings of Obedience: “Father, as I honor the Sabbath, let me walk in the blessings and promises You have for those who keep it (Isaiah 58:14).”
  6. Preparation for Eternal Rest in Christ: “Lord, help me to remain faithful, so that I may enter into Your eternal rest (Hebrews 4:9-10).”

Observing the Sabbath is a way to honor God, receive spiritual renewal, and embrace the rest that He has ordained for His people.
